What is grounding?
Grounding (also known as earthing) is the practice of connecting your body to the Earth’s natural electrical charge.
When you walk barefoot on grass, sand, or soil, your body can absorb free electrons from the ground. These electrons are thought to help neutralise excess electrical charge in the body — something researchers believe may influence sleep, recovery, and overall wellbeing.
Modern lifestyles mean most of us are insulated from the Earth — wearing rubber-soled shoes, living indoors, and spending more time around electronics. Grounding aims to restore that natural connection.

Why this matters: many people report falling asleep faster, waking less during the night, and feeling noticeably more restored in the morning once grounding becomes part of their routine.
What does the science say?
Grounding has been studied in a growing number of peer-reviewed papers. While research is still developing, early findings suggest potential effects on sleep quality, stress response, recovery, and inflammation.
- Sleep quality – improvements have been reported in measures such as sleep quality and insomnia scores
- Stress response – some studies suggest grounding may help support relaxation and nervous system balance
- Recovery – early research has explored links with reduced soreness and improved recovery markers
- Inflammation – researchers have proposed that grounding may help support the body’s natural inflammatory response
In one randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, participants using grounding mats showed significant improvements in sleep-related and stress-related measures, with total sleep time also increasing over the study period.
Important: grounding is a wellness practice, not a medical treatment. Results vary from person to person, and research is ongoing.
How grounding works
The Earth carries a subtle negative charge. Grounding is based on the idea that direct contact with the Earth allows the body to take in free electrons, helping restore a more natural electrical balance.
Put simply, grounding is about reconnecting your body with the Earth — something that happens naturally when you walk barefoot outdoors, but which is much less common in modern life.
Grounding indoors
Walking barefoot outside is the most natural form of grounding, but it is not always practical — especially at night or during colder months.
Grounding products are designed to help recreate this connection indoors by linking conductive materials, such as silver fibre, to the grounding port of a properly grounded outlet.
This makes it possible to stay grounded while you sleep, work, or relax — turning grounding into something you can do effortlessly every day.
Why people use grounding
- To support deeper, more restorative sleep
- To help the body switch into a calmer state at night
- To support overnight recovery
- To reconnect with a more natural daily rhythm
